Nearly three-quarters of Americans are concerned that future artificial intelligence (AI) systems could potentially threaten human survival, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.
The poll found that 73% of US adults are either “very concerned” (38%) or “somewhat concerned” (35%) about the potential threat, while 25% said they were not concerned.
The survey also showed broad support for regulating AI, with 86% backing requirements for AI companies to meet independent safety standards, even if such measures slow development.
Meanwhile, 74% said they have little or no trust in AI company leaders, while 53% said AI would do more harm than good in their day-to-day lives.
The poll surveyed 1,202 US adults nationwide from Sept. 24-27, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
