Over 4 million impacted by eastern India floods

Over four million people have been impacted by floods in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, officials said on Thursday.

According to the state’s Disaster Management Department bulletin, 4.3 million have been impacted across the 14 districts of the state.

Officials said the worst-affected districts are Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai and Buxar.

Several rivers continue to flow above the danger mark, and 951 community kitchens are being operated in various districts for flood-affected people. In addition, 15 relief camps are providing accommodation, food, medical care and other facilities to 11,255 flood victims, the state broadcaster DD News reported.

Given the possibility of further flooding and the need for quick relief and rescue operations, multiple teams of the State Disaster Response Force and National Disaster Response Force have been deployed in various districts of the state.

India experiences heavy monsoon rains each year, typically from June to September, often triggering floods and causing extensive property damage.

Since July, the heavy rains have triggered landslides and flooding in several parts of the country.
