Germany on highest alert amid power grid sabotages

German police are on high alert amid new allegations of sabotage targeting power grids nationwide, following an attempted drone attack on Leipzig Airport.

There was reportedly an attempt to cause a short circuit at an energy facility in Dormagen, North Rhine-Westphalia, German media reported.

Police received a letter claiming responsibility for the incident.

This followed a series of sabotage attempts at power grids across the country. The release of a letter claiming responsibility for the attack alerted security forces to the highest level.

Meanwhile, a substation in the town of Ganderkesee in northern Germany was also sealed off due to suspicious activity.

Security forces expanded their investigation after the Dormagen sabotage attempt and started examining the Weisweiler substation near Aachen in northwestern Germany, bordering Belgium and the Netherlands.

The letter claiming responsibility included a threat of a new attack on the facility, prompting teams to search the area, according to a police force spokesperson.

The letter cited the fight against fossil fuels as the motive. Police launched a large-scale manhunt to apprehend the suspect based on the assessment that a man in Gevelsburg was behind the alleged sabotage.

There have been two more major sabotage attempts at power grids in Germany since the beginning of the week.

A substitution in Bergheim was vandalized, leading to lignite-fired power plant units with a total capacity of 4,200 megawatts to be temporarily taken off the grid.

One of the most critical high-voltage power lines in the state of Brandenburg was damaged with devices containing conducive materials.
