The UK’s national terror threat level has been raised from “substantial” to “severe” following an attack in Golders Green in north London, the government confirmed on Thursday.
The decision, taken by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, means an attack is now considered highly likely in the coming months. Counter-terrorism police have formally declared Wednesday's stabbings in the area to be a terrorist incident.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the change in threat level reflected the seriousness of the situation and warned the public to remain vigilant.
“Today, the national threat level has increased to ‘severe,’ which means a terrorist attack is considered highly likely,” she said in a statement.
“The government has today announced a significant increase in investment to protect our Jewish communities, with record funding for policing and security at synagogues, schools and community centres. And we will do everything in our power to rid society of the evil of antisemitism," she added,
“As the threat level rises, I urge everyone to be vigilant, as they go about their daily lives, and report any concerns they have to the police,” she said.
The decision follows a double stabbing in Golders Green, north London, which police formally declared an act of terrorism.
Two Jewish men were seriously injured, and a 45-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
