GENEVA
The Syrian National Coalition's spokesman Louay Safi said Friday that the ongoing peace talks in Geneva have reached an impasse.
"On Wednesday, the opposition submitted a proposal to Brahimi and the regime delegates for how we can have a political solution. The regime did not acknowledge the proposal. This proposal is still on the table," Safi said in a press conference Friday.
Regarding the Syrian opposition's 24 point plan, Safi said the SNC had not received a response and the meeting would likely be adjourned for a period of time.
"The negotiations have reached an impasse. We have reached a point where we cannot overcome certain points."
The team sent by the Syrian government has not given any indication that it is taking into the consideration our proposal. This is something that is affecting all Syrians, Safi added.
"If this situation does not change, it would mean that continuing this way means the negotiations are not moving towards a political solution. We are now waiting for serious progress," Safi said.
- No change in Russia's position on Syria
Safi said Russia's position has not changed. We still hope Russia would push towards convincing the regime to start negotiating for political solution."
"Russia has decided to continue defending the government's line. They do not want to talk about the political process," Safi said.
- The third round of talks
According to Safi a third round of talks has not been discussed. There might be short meeting tomorrow, but this is not a very strong possibility. It is early to say there will be third round.
"We want the other side to be pushed for a political solution. We have not threatened to withdraw from the negotiations...We are not putting any conditions on a third round, but we see that the talks are going nowhere."
