United Nations-Arab League Joint Syria Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi met Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Wednesday, Damascus-based news website DamPress reports.
The details of the meeting in the Syrian capital were not disclosed, says the website.
Brahimi has been in Damascus over the last two days, holding talks with government officials for an international conference planned in Geneva to find a political solution to the long-boiling civil war that left Syria in ruins.
Earlier this week, a number of rebel groups voiced their opposition to the meeting unless it results in Assad's removal from power. Assad had earlier said he might run for president again in mid-2014.
