Wi-Fi data will be able to travel five times faster with the help of technology that Samsung has developed, the company has announced.
Samsung Electronics, the world’s biggest technological company by revenue, said in a statement it had developed 60GHz Wi-Fi technology which enabled WI-FI data transmission speeds of up to 4.6Gbps - up from 866Mbps per second, the maximum speed possible with existing consumer electronics devices.
The company said that a 1GB movie would now take less than three seconds to transfer between devices, while uncompressed high-definition videos could easily be streamed from mobile devices to TVs in real-time without delay.
Kim Chang Yong, Head of DMC R&D Center of Samsung Electronics, said: "Samsung has successfully overcome the barriers to the commercialization of 60GHz millimeter-wave band Wi-Fi technology, and looks forward to commercializing this breakthrough technology."
Unlike the existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi technologies, Samsung’s standard 60GHz Wi-Fi technology attains high speeds through eliminating co-channel interference, regardless of the number of devices using the same network.
Samsung plans to apply the new technology to a wide range of products, including audio visual and medical devices, as well as telecommunications equipment, in 2015.
