Newly promoted Hull City shocked Manchester United with a 2-0 win on Saturday, marking their return to the English Premier League after a nine-year absence with an impressive home victory.
Hull, owned by Turkish businessman Acun Ilicali, took the lead in the 17th minute at the MKM Stadium when Semi Ajayi reacted quickest to score from close range after Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens parried Oli McBurnie’s effort following a corner.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the 38th minute through Nobel Mendy, who headed home from Regan Slater's free-kick delivery to send Hull into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Manchester United controlled more of the possession after the break as coach Michael Carrick made changes in an attempt to rescue the game, but the visitors were unable to break down a disciplined Hull defense.
United's Bryan Mbeumo had one of his best opportunities late in the second half, but Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis kept out his effort as the hosts preserved their clean sheet.
The defeat was a disappointing start to the new campaign for Carrick's side following the optimism surrounding their summer rebuild.
New midfield signings Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans both started but were substituted during the second half, while Marcus Rashford was also introduced as United searched for a way back into the match.
Hull, meanwhile, secured three points in its first Premier League match since being relegated from the top flight in 2017. Turkish television personality and businessman Ilicali acquired the club in January 2022.
The victory also marked Hull’s first league win over United since 1974.
The Tigers will next travel to Coventry City, while Manchester United will host Ipswich Town.
