BINGOL, Turkey
A Turkish soldier died Thursday when an explosive placed on a railway in the eastern province of Bingol was remotely detonated during attempts to defuse, officials said.
The victim was Gendarmerie Sergeant Veli Ates, according to a statement from the Bingol Governor's office.
The blast happened on the railway connecting Bingol and Elazig provinces, near Suveren village, it said.
A bomb squad from the local gendarmerie had been trying to defuse the makeshift explosive when it blew up.
In a separate attack, a soldier was injured and hospitalized following an attack on a military post in the southeastern province of Sirnak.
A group of masked individuals attacked the garrison headquarters in Cizre with percussion bombs and fireworks, the military sources said.
Security forces have launched investigations to find the perpetrators of both attacks.
