Turkey's main opposition party CHP supports the participation of a possible international coalition against the Islamic State militant group.
The Republican People's Party leader's comments came after discussions took place between the United States President Barack Obama and the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on a broad coalition to counter the IS group and the continuation of humanitarian assistance to civilians under threat in Iraq.
As the IS have established bases in Syria and recruit foreign fighters from dozens of countries, including several from the West, the U.S. and Europe, western powers have been in search of a global and regional coalition to fight and uproot the terror group’s threat in the Middle East.
Speaking at the party headquarters on Tuesday, the party chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu said the party will not oppose Turkey's involvement in a coalition against IS in the Middle East, and added the decision will be highly important for Turkey's future. "Turkey is already a part of Western alliance in terms of defense," he said.
The U.S. has conducted more than one hundred airstrikes across Iraq on IS targets since President Obama authorized the military to carry out an air campaign in early August.
