The Somali army on Tuesday killed at least 12 Al-Shabaab militants in heavy fighting in the southern town of Garbaherey, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency.
The agency reported that clashes took place in Somalia’s southern Gedo region, where the army has recently launched an intense campaign against the militant group.
Over the course of the last year, Al-Shabaab has suffered a number of significant reverses.
It has lost most of its strongholds in southern and central Somalia to Somali government troops and African Union (AU) forces, which include contingents from Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Burundi and Djibouti.
