CAIRO
A car bomb exploded outside the Italian consulate in the Egyptian capital of Cairo on Saturday, killing at least one person.
Nine people were also wounded in the attack, which damaged the consulate, culture center and nearby houses.
The explosion targeted an Italian culture center near the consulate, Husam Abdulgafur, a health ministry spokesman told Anadolu Agency.
Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said via Twitter that no Italian citizens were among the victims. Gentiloni also said that a crisis desk has been established at the ministry to follow developments.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Last month, Egypt’s prosecutor-general Hisham Barakat was killed in an attack that targeted his convoy in Cairo.
A shadowy group calling itself the Popular Resistance in Giza claimed responsibility for that attack.
Egypt has been dogged by turmoil since the military unseated democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi in a 2013 coup following protests against his administration.
