The Afghan government has officially sought the death sentence Saturday for all seven arrested convicts of an unprecedented gang-rape in capital Kabul last month.
The incident shocked the conservative Afghan society who vehemently called for the public execution of the culprits for such a rare and heinous offense.
According to the details, ten men wore police uniform and were stationed on the main road linking Kabul city to its Paghman district in the north when they stopped a convoy of four cars returning from a wedding party.
The convicts looted the men and women who were wearing lots of jewellery, abused the men and gang raped four of the women, including a pregnant woman and a teenager for hours.
Kabul police Chief General Zahir announced the arrest of seven men last week. The victims initially refrained from lodging a complaint fearing humility in the conservative society, but once the matter became viral on mainstream and social media, they identified the culprits at the police headquarters while wearing the hijab (the veil which conceals the face).
Afghanistan’s Attorney General Office said Saturday it had sought capital punishment for all those accused in the documentation submitted to the Supreme Court.
President Hamid Karzai has already called for the execution of those found guilty.
Three gang members are said to be still on the run.
