An Egyptian court on Wednesday slapped former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif with a 5-year jail term in a retrial on charges of squandering public funds during his time in office, a judicial source has said.
The court also fined Nazif 53.6 million Egyptian pounds and ordered him to repay 48.6 million pounds, the source said.
An Egyptian court had earlier ordered a retrial after accepting Nazif’s appeal against an earlier verdict jailing him for three years for illegal gains.
Nazif had served as prime minister from July 2004 until January 2011, when a popular uprising swept autocrat Hosni Mubarak from power.
