JERUSALEM
The Israeli army said Monday that it detained two Palestinians in the West Bank in the possession of explosive charges.
In a statement carried by the Israeli radio, the military said that the two Palestinians were detained while possessing three explosive charges and a petrol bomb in northern West Bank.
The two youths were planning to use the explosive devices in attacks against Israeli targets, the army alleged, without disclosing their identities or where they were detained.
The detentions came after a night of high tension in several areas in Jerusalem where at least 70 Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli troops hours after a 16-year-old Palestinian teen died of a head injury caused by Israeli gunfire last week.
Israeli troops used stun grenades, rubber bullets and teargas to disperse stone-throwing Palestinians protesting against the death of the teen.
International law views the West Bank and Arab East Jerusalem as occupied territories seized by Israel in 1967.
After signing the 1993 Oslo Accords with the Palestinian Authority, Israel withdrew from major West Bank cities while retaining control of the rest of the territory.
