ROME
Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Emma Bonino held a bilateral discussion with Qatari counterpart Khalid bin Muhammed al-Attiyah.
A press announcement made by the Italian Foreign Ministry stated that both ministers had touched upon the regional issues, while the Italian FM provided information about the decisions made in the EU Foreign Ministers meeting, such as the ceasing of military material aid to Egypt.
Bonini said that the efforts need to be reinforced by the international community in order to establish a cease-fire and end the violence and state of emergency by bringing all Egyptian parties together.
The Italian FM noted that she worried about the violent dispersion of the demonstrations and that all political parties in Egypt are supposed to establish a common ground for dialogue.
Bonino stated that Qatar can take an important role alongside the parties so as to promote comprehensive ways for overcoming the crisis.
Bonino also mentioned that UN officers are currently in Syria to inspect what occurred there and whether the Assad regime used chemical weapons, but also noted that the permission of Syrian authorities is needed for the UN officers to enter the field.
Emma Bonino also stated that bilateral relations between the two countries are at an excellent level as they mutually expressed their wish to further strenghten them.
