NEW YORK
A gunman killed a security guard in a federal building in New York before turning the gun on himself, U.S. media reported Friday.
The suspect -- identified as Kevin Downing, 68, of New Jersey -- walked into the lobby of the building in Lower Manhattan, approached the metal detector, and immediately pulled out a gun and shot the security guard in the head, New York Police Department Chief James O'Neill said, as quoted by CBS.
Upon walking toward an elevator and encountering another employee, he shot himself, O'Neill said.
The victim has been identified as 52-year-old Idrissa Camara.
Police said there was no indication of terrorism and that it was working with the FBI and other authorities to determine the suspect’s motive.
According to media reports, Downing is a former federal employee who served at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, from which he was fired several years ago.
The bureau has an office on the eighth floor of the building, but it was unknown whether the suspect had once worked there, CBS said.
The building at 201 Varick Street also houses a U.S. post office, a Department of Veterans Affairs office and an immigration court among other bureaus.
