India and Pakistan remained deadlocked over trials related to the fatal 2008 Mumbai attack that killed more than 200 people.
During a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly brought up the issue of the alleged mastermind behind the attack, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, being released on bail earlier this year.
"Nawaz conveyed to Modi that more evidence and information were needed to expedite the Mumbai trial," Pakistan's security advisor Sartaj Aziz told reporters on Monday.
India has long called for Pakistan to do more to try those behind the attack, which allegedly was carried out by militants crossing over from Pakistan.
The Friday meeting between the two leaders, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Russia, was seen as a breakthrough moment in the two countries' tense relationship but Indian media have called Aziz's comments on Monday a "turnaround."
Aziz also emphasized that resolving the issue of divided Kashmir -- parts of which are held by both countries -- must be part of any future talks.
"Pakistan has stood by Kashmiris in their legitimate struggle.. We would continue to extend political, moral, and diplomatic support to our Kashmiri brethren," he said.
Pakistan's High Commissioner to India invited pro-independence figures from Indian-held Kashmir to an Eid meal on Monday. A similar invitation to Kashmiri leaders resulted in India breaking off peace talks last year.
