CAIRO (AA) - September 5, 2012 - Egyptian President Muhammad Mursi on Wednesday said that a quartet committee, made up of Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Iran, would convene soon on the Syrian crisis.
Speaking at a meeting of foreign ministers of the Arab League in Cairo on Wednesday, President Mursi underlined that "everyone was invited to the meeting of the quartet committee and had to make efforts on the issue".
While not giving specific information about the date and place of the quartet committee's meeting, President Mursi stressed that there was no time to lose or slow down.
"Everyone should know that the people of Syria have made their decision and what has to be done must be done. There is still time to end the bloodshed in Syria," Mursi noted.
The foreign ministers of the Arab League will discuss on Wednesday the issue of Syria and other regional matters.
Delivering the opening remarks at the Cairo meeting on Wednesday, President Mursi stated that Egypt had no intention to export a revolution to any where.
We support the legitimate demands of people in countries going through transformation, Mursi said.
"Egypt has returned to its leadership role in the region. Egypt is ready to do all it can so the Palestinians act in unity," Mursi expressed.
"The issue of Palestine is the most important item for the Arab world. Egypt shares the same stance on all Arab territory under occupation and not just Palestine," Mursi noted.
"We can not talk about stability in the Middle East before the Palestine problem gets solved," Mursi also said.
Following Mursi's opening remarks, the meeting of the foreign ministers of the Arab League continued behind closed doors.
Syria boycotted the Cairo meeting. A group of Syrian opposition members gathered in front of the building where the Arab League foreign ministers were meeting and chanted slogans against the Syrian regime.
