BUJUMBURA, Burundi
Two members of a Burundian opposition party were killed Wednesday night in capital Bujumbura, a security source told Anadolu Agency.
An eyewitness said that Emmanuel Ndayishimiye, 21, was shot dead at 8 p.m. (1800 GMT) on Wednesday. He was a member of the National Liberation Front (FNL), an opposition party, according to Pierre Nkwirikiye, deputy police spokesperson.
“He received a phone call and left his home and then we heard a gunshot followed by a grenade explosion,” a family member, who requested anonymity, said. “They killed him because he participated in protests against Pierre Nkurunziza's third term.”
Later that night, a body was found near Kinama market in Bujumbura, according to the police spokesman, who confirmed that he was also a member of the FNL party, without giving his identity.
Less than two weeks ago, Emmanuel and Benjamin Kadogo, two brothers who belong to the Movement for Solidarity and Development opposition group, were both found dead in the capital’s Mutakura district.
Wednesday's killings came one day after a controversial presidential election, which is expected to give incumbent President Pierre Nkurunziza a third term in office.
On Tuesday, Burundian civil society groups collectively announced that they would not recognize the results of the country’s presidential polls, which were held amid ongoing political violence.
