KIEV, Ukraine
Ukraine is in a genuine war situation, both in a military and economic sense, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has said.
In a speech in the country's capital, Kiev, on Tuesday, Yatsenyuk said that Ukraine would save itself from the situation.
"Ukraine is in a genuine war situation. Ukraine is in a war which involves different fields, including military, economic and informatics," said Yatsenyuk.
Meanwhile, Oleksandr Turchynov, the Ukrainian parliamentary chairman, announced the expiration of a ceasefire declared in eastern Ukraine on 18 June by the Ukrainian administration.
"Our military forces give heavy blows to the bases of terrorists," Yatsenyuk told parliament in a morning session.
The aim behind the ceasefire was to give the separatists a chance to disarm and for a wider peace process to begin, granting more authority to regional governments, he said.
EU leaders declared on Friday that Russia had three days to take a series of steps in Ukraine "towards peace" or face targeted sanctions.
