US issued a global travel warning to its citizens due to the threat of an al-Qaeda attack and closed down 21 embassies and consulates across the Muslim world for the weekend.
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey in an interview with ABC News said that "US officials have determined, there is a significant threat stream and the intent is not only to attack U.S. but also Western interests."
After reviewing a threat of a terrorist attack, US closed down 21 US embassies and consulates in the Muslim world including a global travel warning to US citizens.
US Department of State announced on Thursday that some US embassies across the world that would normally be open this Sunday will be closed due to unspecified security concerns.
State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf told a daily press meeting on Thursday, "the Department of State has instructed certain US embassies and consulates to remain closed or to suspend operations on Sunday, August 4th."
"Security considerations have led us to take this precautionary step," said Harf and had not given any details in regards to what caused those considerations.
Also, Harf had not given details about which embassies and consulates would be closed on August 4 yet an official from the State Department noted, those embassies and consulates were the ones which would be usually be open on Sundays.
Some US missions in the Muslim world are usually open on Sundays.
