Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani discussed regional developments and efforts to reduce tensions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a phone call Thursday, according to Qatar’s Foreign Ministry.
In a statement, the ministry said the two officials reviewed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen the strategic partnership between Qatar and the US.
The discussions also addressed the latest regional developments, particularly ongoing diplomatic efforts and joint coordination to de-escalate tensions and enhance regional security and stability.
During the call, Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed Qatar’s support for diplomatic initiatives aimed at reaching a solution that guarantees freedom of maritime navigation and paves the way for a comprehensive agreement to achieve lasting peace in the region.
The US State Department said Rubio underscored Washington's "commitment to Qatar's security and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz."
Rubio also expressed appreciation for Doha's "continued mediation efforts and strong and close partnership in promoting a more secure region," it added.
The talks come amid continued tensions over maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.
Iran and the US remain at odds over control of the strategic waterway, with Tehran insisting on its authority to manage passage through the strait, while Washington demands unrestricted navigation.
Qatar has been involved in diplomatic efforts to ease regional tensions and facilitate negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
