SARAJEVO (AA) – German policy toward the Balkans will remain the same even if the German government changes after the elections, German ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Ulrike Knotz told media in Sarajevo at a conference organized on German elections.
Knotz said that majority of German parliament members support Bosnia and Herzegovina in its bid to become an EU member, as well as other countries in the region. She added, "if Bosnia is to become a part of the EU, it is something to be decided here (Sarajevo) and not in Berlin or Brussels."
"Foreign policy is like a large steam engine. It is hard to initiate it, but it stays on its path. All the parties in Bundestag (German Parliament) are absolutely ready to accept the Balkans EU perspective.“
Knotz also spoke about the Bosnian diaspora in Germany and the issue of immigration in her country.
"All the parties are demanding that in the future we target more people who are immigrants and employ them within the public services as teachers, police officers, civil servants There is consensus in Bundestag that Germany has to be an attractive country for qualified immigration,“ Knotz said.
Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) party achieved an election victory on Sunday, falling just short of an absolute majority.
