ANKARA
About 56 million Turkish citizens will vote on June 7, in the country's 25th general elections, to elect the 550 members of Parliament.
Some 54,812,423 people are registered to vote in Turkey while 1,103,258 people will be able to cast their votes outside the country.
According to the calendar, parties that wish to participate in the elections have to provide the Supreme Election Board with lists of MP candidates until 5 p.m. local time on April 7.
The Supreme Election Board will announce the list of MP candidates on April 24.
The elections in Turkey will start on June 7, at 08:00 a.m. (0600GMT) and finish at 17:00 p.m. (1500GMT).
Turkish nationals living abroad will be able to cast their votes between May 8 and May 31.
The election campaign will start on May 28 and end on June 6.
Outside Turkey, ballot boxes will be set up in 54 countries, in 112 representation offices.
Radio, televisions and official gazettes will announce the list of MP nominees on April 24.
Thirty-one parties will participate in the parliamentary elections, including the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party, the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) as well as the pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP).
Turkey is divided into 85 constituencies in 81 provinces for a total of 550 MPs.
The issue of a presidential system has been topical in Turkey for the past few months, as the country approaches parliamentary elections in June 2015. Turkey is currently governed under a parliamentary system.
Erdogan has lately been pushing for a presidential system to replace the current parliamentary one. But AK Party does not have enough seats in parliament to vote for a constitutional change.
According to the current Turkish Constitution, such a change requires the approval of two-thirds (367) of the (550) lawmakers. Only then can the president approve it or hold a referendum on the matter.
The country's current constitution was drafted two years after a military takeover in 1980 and numerous amendments have been made to it since then.
