ANKARA
Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has stated that they are concerned over the possibility of Abdul Qader Mollah, a leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami political party being executed in Bangladesh.
In a written statement issued today, the MFA has stated that they are closely monitoring the developments in Bangladesh; and the execution could further escalate the tension in the country.
Noting that this was not the way to heal old wounds or reach a social compromise, the statement concluded: "We sincerely hope that all sides in Bangladesh will act with common sense and take reasonable steps toward relieving the tension and achieving a social compromise. As always, Turkey will continue to stand by its friend and brother country Bangladesh."
A war crimes tribunal in Bangladesh had on February 5 sentenced Molla to life imprisonment for killings, rapes and looting during the War of Independence in 1971.
