KABUL
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani strongly condemned on Wednesday torture by the CIA detailed in a recent senate report, calling it “inhumane and vicious.”
President Ghani, addressing the nation on TV, said it was against all accepted human rights principles as well as U.S. laws.
“There is no justification for these kinds of acts and inhumane torture in the current world,” he said.
The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee released the report on CIA torture on Tuesday, stating that the torture of Al-Qaeda suspects was far more brutal than acknowledged and failed to produce useful intelligence.
“Unfortunately, most of the detainees who were tortured and their rights were violated were later found innocent,” the Afghan president explained.
President Ghani, who occupied his position three months ago, said that from Jan. 1 2015 onward, no foreign forces will be allowed to detain any Afghan national and torture them.
"Our constitution values human rights. We want to know the exact number of Afghans tortured and also we want restoration of their dignity,” he said.
Ghani said he downloaded the 499-page report on Tuesday night from the internet and had read every page.
The senate released a report on Tuesday detailing CIA interrogation and torture techniques.
The senate report explained that the interrogation techniques were authorized by former U.S. President George W. Bush; however the White House, the Justice Department, Congress and the public were not informed and were misled.
