ANBAR, Iraq
Iraqi security forces have wrested control of Anbar University – located west of Ramadi city in Iraq’s western Anbar province – from the Daesh militant group, a government official told Anadolu Agency on Sunday.
“Security forces, backed by U.S. and Iraqi air support, have liberated Anbar University from Daesh, leaving 29 Daesh militants dead and 15 injured,” Eid Ayyash, a spokesman for Anbar’s provincial council, said.
The spokesman did not, however, mention any casualties from among the ranks of Iraqi security forces, who, he said, were currently “purging” the university campus of explosive devices planted by the militant group.
In mid-July, Iraq’s Defense Ministry announced the launch of fresh military operations aimed at flushing Daesh militants from Anbar, of which Ramadi is the provincial capital.
Although Daesh recently lost several parts of Iraq’s Diyala, Ninawah and Saladin provinces, it remains in control of most of Anbar, including Ramadi.
