CAIRO (AA) - The protests, which come before the planned June 30 opposition rallies against the president, are a show of support by the public for Morsi, as well as the ruling Freedom and Justice Party, Anadolu Agency correspondent said.
The rallies, bringing together thousands in capital Cairo, as well as Alexandria, Luxor and al-Sharqia, are supported by the powerful Muslim Brotherhood, of which Morsi was a member, as well as various Salafi groups and youth movements in Egypt.
A large group that gathered in front of the Rabia al-Adawiya mosque in the capital chanted "we don't want conflict" and "No to violence", while brochures that say the opposition Watan Party was polarizing Egypt were distributed to the crowd.
Police were not commissioned in Cairo protests, with protesting groups taking charge to maintain security, AA correspondent said.
Meanwhile, occasional clashes took place during demonstrations in Alexandria. Different groups came head to head and attacked each other with clubs and stones, he said.
US Embassy in Cairo has warned US citizens in the Egyptian capital to keep away from areas where protests are held.
