BENI, Democratic Republic of Congo
Five people were killed on Thursday night by Ugandan Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels near DRC’s eastern city of Beni, a Congolese military source told Anadolu Agency.
Lieutnant Mak Hazukay Mongba, a military spokesman, told Anadolu Agency that rebels attacked a military camp in Mayi-Moya, 45 kilometers from Beni in eastern DRC.
“They attacked us yesterday at 6 pm [1700 GMT] killing three civilians and two Congolese soldiers. However, we managed to push them away,” Mongba said. “On Monday, we launched a search operation in Mutara, Abialos, Madima and Mayi-Moya neighborhoods. It was a great success because we held many Ugandan ADF rebels. We will continue untill the last bastion.”
ADF, which for years has been based in the eastern DRC, is comprised of several armed groups opposed to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
Before October 2014, the rebels carried out multiple attacks in eastern DRC that left more than 300 people dead.
The Congolese army, backed by UN intervention forces, has since regained many villages formerly controlled by ADF.
