ALEPPO, Syria
U.S.-led coalition airstrikes killed 62 ISIL militants on Thursday and Friday.
At least 25 militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant were killed in airstrikes on ISIL targets near the Kurdish-populated key Syrian border town of Kobani, according to local military sources. Two vehicles belonging to the militant group were destroyed after coalition forces conducted strikes on the eastern part of Kobani, the field commander of a Syrian opposition group Faris Abu Ahmet told Anadolu Agency (AA).
“ISIL militants have gained only a part of eastern Kobani and had not been able to make more extensive progress into the town,” the field commander said, “Clashes with ISIL are continuing in the southern part of the town.”
Another 37 ISIL militants were killed in Iraq’s western Anbar province after airstikes, Shia-led Al-Jazeera and Al-Badia Operations Commander Brigadier General Zia Kazim told Anadolu Agency.
Meanwhile, at least 7 people were killed, and 11 were injured, after a vehicle loaded with explosives was detonated in Iraq’s eastern province of Diyala, Police Chief Jamil al Shimari said.
Among those killed were five police officers and three of the 11 injured were police officers as well.
According to the police chief, some of the injured are in critical condition, but the exact number is not known.
ISIL, which already controls parts of Syria, has extended its reach into Iraq since June 10, when it seized Iraq's second-largest city Mosul. ISIL violence has claimed more than 1,400 lives in Iraq, and caused 1.2 million Iraqis - including Turkmen, Arabs, Christians and Ezidis - to flee their homes.
