ANKARA
The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor decided on Friday not to proceed against Turkey’s 11th President, Abdullah Gul, in the country’s high profile lost trillion case.
The prosecutor decided not to proceed against the ex-President because he has been unable to “obtain required evidence” on the issue.
The lost trillion case refers to the long-running lawsuit against some members of Turkey’s conservative Welfare Party. They were accused of not paying back the treasury one trillion Turkish lira.
The Treasury had requested the grant money back from the party after it was shut down in the aftermath of the Feb. 28, 1997 post-modern military coup.
According to a statement published last month on Gul’s website, the former president gave his testimony to an Ankara prosecutor on Nov. 18.
He could only testify once his presidential term ended because of the political immunity he enjoyed.
In the statement on his website, Gul said he was pleased to testify in the case and that his testimony should erase doubts in anyone's minds.
